The Difference between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous vinyl flooring

What is vinyl flooring?

Vinyl flooring refers to the flooring produced with PVC materials. Specifically, it is produced by taking polyvinyl chloride and its copolymer resin as the main raw material, adding fillers, plasticizers, stabilizers, colorants and other auxiliary materials on sheet continuous substrate through coating process or calendering, extrusion or extrusion process

Also known as “light floor material”, it is a very popular new type of light floor decoration material in the world and widely used, such as houses, hospitals, schools, office buildings, factories, public places, supermarkets, businesses, etc.

There are 2 ways to define different types of vinyl flooring

In terms of structure, there are mainly two types: heterogeneous and homogeneous.

In terms of size:  it can be divided into vinyl sheet, vinyl plank and vinyl tile flooring.

Below we will talk about the main differences between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous vinyl flooring

It’s an in-depth article that takes 20 minutes to read.

The Difference between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous vinyl flooring

1) Difference in structure

Heterogeneous vinyl flooring is the multi layer flooring with different contents from top bottom. It combines with UV layer, Wear layer, Printed layer, Glass-fiber layer, foamed layer and Backing layer. It can be custom printed with all kinds of stylish patterns and innovation designs.

Homogeneous vinyl flooring is the one single layer flooring with same content from top to bottom made by same mixed raw materials.

2) Difference in wear resistance

Both homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl flooring are performing very well in wear resistance.

There is a special transparent wear-resistant layer processed by high technology on the surface of vinyl flooring, and its wear-resistant revolution can reach 300000 revolutions. In the traditional ground materials, the wear-resistant laminate flooring has only 13000 revolutions, and the good laminate floor has only 20000 revolutions. Super wear resistance, impact resistance, no deformation, reusable, and the service life is generally 20-30 years

But since homogeneous flooring is with the same structure from top to bottom, and we can also say that the wear layer is from top to bottom, which is definitely thicker than heterogeneous vinyl flooring. So homogeneous vinyl flooring is better in wear resistance, this is the major advantages of homogeneous sheet vinyl flooring.

3) Difference in fire resistance

Both homogeneous and heterogeneous sheet vinyl flooring are performing very well in fire resistance. But same as wear resistance, since homogeneous flooring is with the same structure from top to bottom, so it will stands better and longer if there is any fire damage.

4) Difference in colors.

For homogeneous vinyl sheet, you can only do directional and non-directional in the patterns. Even though you can still have many different designs and there are still very beautiful; but heterogeneous is much better in colors cause there is a printing layer in the flooring structure.

Basically no matter what patterns you need, as long as there is a design artwork available, it should be no problem to print that on the flooring. The printing quality is very good and looks vivid.

5) Difference in resilience.

Both homogeneous and heterogeneous are vinyl flooring. One of the advantages of vinyl flooring is high resilience, so it is very easy to understand that both homogeneous and heterogeneous are excellent in resilience.

Vinyl flooring is with high resilience. It has a good resistance recovery under the impact of heavy objects, so as to minimize the damage of the ground to the human body and disperse the impact on the feet. Therefore, it can greatly reduce the sliding and falling injury of personnel, and has strong resilience recovery for the impact damage of heavy objects without causing damage. The latest data show that the rate of falling and injury of excellent plastic ground in the space with large traffic is nearly 70% lower than that of other ground.

But still there is difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous flooring.

Heterogeneous vinyl flooring has glass-fiber layer, foamed layer and backing layer, which makes it softer and higher resilient. The flooring will recover very fast once contact by another object.

Homogeneous is not that soft as heterogeneous, and it will take a little bit longer to recover.

6) Difference in sound absorption and noise reduction

We have to say heterogeneous and homogeneous are performing very well in sound absorption and noise reduction cause both of them are vinyl flooring. It can fully play the functions of sound absorption and sound insulation, isolate 15db-19db noise, and solve the trouble of noise

But Heterogeneous vinyl flooring is better cause it has glass-fiber layer, foamed layer and backing layer, this product structure enable it with incomparable sound absorption.

7) Difference in maintenance

Both homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl flooring are easy to clean and maintain for water proof, antibacterial, fungicidal and less flooring joints.

In case there is any damage, such as scratch by very sharp objects, then homogeneous vinyl flooring will be easier to maintain, it can just clean the scratch area and it will look new cause all the flooring structure from top to bottom are the same. But homogeneous vinyl flooring will be a little bit difficult, it might need to cut another piece of flooring and replace the scratch area which is time consuming and might not be as new as the original flooring.

8) Difference in cost.

Both homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl flooring are having big cost saving when comparing to other flooring such as wood, stone, ceramic, bamboo and rubber.

But homogeneous is with higher cost than heterogeneous vinyl flooring, normally

Conclusion:

Homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl flooring, which one is better?

Actually we cannot say which one is better, but there are different emphases in applications.

For those places need higher resilience, colorful pattern, and sound absorption & noise reduction, heterogeneous vinyl flooring is better. Such as school, library, nursing home, music room, concert hall and GYM.

For those places need higher wear resistance, higher fire resistance and easier maintenance, homogeneous vinyl flooring is better. Such as hospital corridor & operation room; airport, traffic station, shopping mall, office building.
